What Could Go Wrong on Your Wedding Day (And How to Stay Ready So You Don’t Have to Get Ready)

Your wedding day is one of the most anticipated days of your life filled with love, joy, and unforgettable moments. But even the most well-planned wedding can come with unexpected bumps. As a seasoned NYC wedding officiant, I’ve seen it all from weather hiccups to wardrobe malfunctions. This blog isn’t here to scare you, it’s here to prepare you.

Here are some common things that can go wrong on your wedding day and golden gems to help you stay ahead of the storm (literally and figuratively).

  1. Weather Woes (Rain, Wind, Heat, Snow…)

What could go wrong:

Outdoor ceremonies are magical, but Mother Nature has her own plans. Sudden rain, intense heat, unexpected cold fronts, or strong winds can all disrupt your big moment.

GEM 💎:

Always have a Plan B. If you’re eloping in Central Park or having a rooftop ceremony, make sure there’s a nearby covered option or backup indoor location. Renting umbrellas or fans for guests also shows next-level thoughtfulness. Bonus: Overcast skies make for gorgeous photos.

  1. Lateness (Couple, Guests, Vendors… Even Officiants!)

What could go wrong:

Traffic jams, wardrobe delays, lost vendors… even the officiant getting stuck in transit can throw off your timeline.

GEM 💎:

Pad your schedule. Give yourself an extra 30-60 minutes between events. Communicate clearly with all your vendors and consider hiring a day-of coordinator even for elopements.

For officiants (like myself), always confirm the location and time 24-48 hours before. A professional officiant will never show up late period.

  1. Tech Issues (Music, Mic, Live Stream Fails)

What could go wrong:

The playlist won’t connect to Bluetooth. The mic cuts out. Your cousin accidentally exits the live stream you promised Grandma in Florida.

GEM 💎:

Designate a “Tech Angel.” Have someone assigned to handle music, volume levels, and the livestream setup. Test everything before guests arrive. If it’s crucial, have a backup speaker and charger on deck.

  1. Wardrobe or Beauty Malfunctions

What could go wrong:

A dress zipper breaks. A boutonnière won’t stay pinned. Edges sweat out. Someone steps on the veil.

GEM 💎:

Create a wedding day emergency kit. Include safety pins, bobby pins, fashion tape, a mini steamer, scissors, hair spray, and stain remover. And yes blotting paper and extra deodorant.

  1. Forgetting Key Items (Rings, License, Vows)

What could go wrong:

It’s shocking how many people forget the actual wedding rings or leave the marriage license at home.

GEM 💎:

Create a “Wedding Morning Checklist.” Assign someone to be the Keeper of the Rings and another to be the Guardian of the License. As an officiant, I always ask the couple for the license before the ceremony begins. And don’t worry if you forget your vows, I got you. I can help you freestyle with heart.

  1. Guest Drama or No-Shows

What could go wrong:

Family tension brews. A bridesmaid gets cold feet. Someone gets too tipsy too early.

GEM 💎:

Stick to the love. Don’t let others’ energy shake your spirit. Your wedding is your moment. Let go of who didn’t come and focus on the ones who showed up with full hearts. Energy check the guest list beforehand, and remember peace over pleasing.

  1. Emotions Take Over (And That’s Okay)

What could go wrong:

Crying mid-vows. Nerves during the first look. Forgetting your speech due to anxiety.

GEM 💎:

Take breath breaks. You don’t have to hold it together the whole time. Cry. Laugh. Stumble. That’s the beauty of real love. Your emotions make the moment rich, not messy.

Final Thought:

No wedding is ever 100% perfect. And honestly? That’s what makes it unforgettable. When things go “wrong,” it becomes part of your story. It’s not about flawless execution it’s about the love you two share, and the magic of saying “yes” to forever.

Whether you’re eloping in NYC, planning a big bash, or doing it your way just remember:

Stay ready so you don’t have to get ready. ✨

If you’re looking for an officiant who will be there rain or shine, early and fully present I’m here for you.

Let’s create a ceremony that’s not just beautiful, but unforgettable (even when the unexpected happens).

With love,

Clarice Leonard
